I am a Technology Entrepreneur in Melbourne, Australia. My passion is Smart Environments - using technology to automatically optimise our interactions with Nature. Outdoor lights should not be on during the day. Lights, air conditioners, TVs and computers, do not need to be on in unoccupied rooms. Entire floors of office buildings don't need to be lit up, just because one person is working late.
Measure, Control, and Respond. A Smart Building is aware of what is going on inside it and around it. Who is coming and going, where do they go, how much energy do they use. At first, humans need to look at this data and make decisions about how it can be optimised. Once the building learns, it will be able to automatically sense and adapt to changes in climate conditions and usage patterns.
The next Internet is the "Internet of Things" - all the electrical and electronic devices being networked in buildings. This doesn't have to be hard, and it shouldn't mean even more remote controls on your coffee table. I am founder and Chairman of ekoLiving.com. ekoLiving is dedicated to building Smart Environments that save energy and money, and improve the wellbeing of their users.
